John Arthur Allen

John Arthur, known as 'Arthur', was the husband of Alice née Clarke. His wife was born in Greasley, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Clarke. In 1891 her family was living in Greasley: William (41), a coal miner hewer, Elizabeth (37), Alice (12 b. Greasley) and William (8). Alice's father was still living in Greasley in 1901 but although described as married on the census return only he and his son William (18), an apprentice, were in the home on the night of the census. Neither John Arthur nor Alice have yet been traced on the 1901 Census, but they were married in 1909 (A/M/J Nottingham) and were recorded on the 1911 Census living at 38 Coppice Road, Mapperley, Nottingham. In the household on the night of the census were: John (35), a domestic gardener, Alice (32), Allan (sic) Clarke (12) who was described as their son, and William Clarke (61) Alice's widowed father. Their son's name was given as 'Allan' both on the census and in the notice commemorating John's death which was published in the local paper in 1916. However, the only likely record of his birth is that for an Allen (sic) Clarke whose birth was registered in 1898 (O/N/D Basford) and if correct means his first name took the spelling of his father's surname.
