Horace George was the son of John Henry a toy manufacturers foreman and Sophy Smith (née Foster). His father was born in Lullington, Derbyshire in 1863, his mother was also born in 1863 at Billinghay, Lincolnshire. Married at Nottingham in 1888, they had four children - Maud b.1889, Ewart Charles Henry b.1891, William Harold b. 1892 and Horace George b.1896. In 1901, they lived at 3, Ruskin Street, Radford Boulevard and in 1911 at 19, Highbury Avenue, Bulwell (both Nottingham). Maud was a blouse cutter, Ewart and William were lithograph artist’s apprentices.
Horace Smith enlisted in Nottingham. He landed in France with 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 8th September 1914, and was later transferred to the 1st battalion. He was killed in action on 15th January 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Richebourg-l'Avoue.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 22 January 1915: SMITH, killed in action on January 1st, Horace G. 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters, son of JH and S Smith of 19 Highbury Avenue, Bulwell, aged 19 years. In memoriam published 15th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- SMITH. – In loving memory of Horace G. Smith (Sherwood Foresters) killed in action January 15th, 1915, buried at Neuve Chapelle. Ever in our thoughts.
