William Alfred Sharp was the son of William Henry a lacemaker and his wife Florence Emma Sharp née Storey of 10 Osborne Street, Alfreton Road, Nottingham. His father William Henry was born in 1873 in Nottingham, and his mother Florence Emma Storey was born in 1874 in Boston, Lincolnshire. They were married in 1893 in Nottingham and had four children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood before1911. Both children were born in Nottingham, William Alfred's birth was registerd in 1894 (J/F/M Basford) and their other surviving child, Charles Ernest, was born on 6 December 1901 (O/N/D Nottingham). In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Osborne Street, Nottingham, and are shown as William Henry 38 yrs a lacemaker who is living with his wife Florence Emma 37 yrs and their two sons William Alfred 17 yrs a printer and Charles Ernest 9 yrs a scholar. Also living with them is Nellie Storey 27 yrs (b1884 Boston), Florence's sister, who is working as a cigarette packer for Players Imperial Tobacco. Florence Emma died aged 44 on 31 August 1918 (Sep Nottingham). From information on the gravestone in Nottingham General Cemetery it is likely that William Henry died aged 71 on 27 April 1945; he appears to have remarried (Kate) after the death of his first wife. William's brother, Charles Ernest, died aged 75 in 1976 (Dec Nottingham).
Private William Alfred Sharp, served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He landed in France on 25th June 1915 and died of wounds on 13th August 1915 and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery (grave ref VIII.B.71).
