Family History

Albert was the son of James a farm worker/wagoner and Lucy Tyler (née Pritchett) of Farm Cottage, Aslockton. His father was born in 1861 at Aslockton, his mother in 1866 at Collingham. Married in 1886, they had the following children at Aslockton - James Robert b.1886, Albert b.1888 and Lois b.1890. In 1911, they lived at Aslockton. James was a gardener and Lois a dress maker. His parents are buried in Mill Lane Cemetery Aslockton where Albert is commemorated on the family headstone.

Military History

Albert Tyler enlisted on 27th February 1909 at Norwich for 12 years – 7 in the line and 5 in reserve. He was posted to the 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. He served in India from 8th February 1911 was promoted to Lance Corporal on 9th September 1914. He left India on 5th November 1914 and posted to the 2nd Battalion and sent to Mesopotamia on 6th November 1914, serving in the Basra area. He contracted dysentery and was hospitalised on 3rd June 1915 returning to India on 25th June 1915. He was promoted to sergeant on 17th November 1918. His original enlistment expired on in 1919 and he agreed to re-enlist on 10th July 1919 whilst at Bangalore. His conduct was stated to be exemplary. He was admitted to hospital on 21st July 1919 and died of pneumonia. He was buried in Calicut New Beach Cemetery and is now commemorated on the Madras Memorial in Chennai.

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour (abridged) 6/9/1919: 'Tyler. On August 1st 1919, at Calicut, India, Albert Tyler, Reg Sergt Major, Norfolk Regt, youngest son of James and Lucy Tyler of Aslockton, died of pneumonia.'
