William Wilson was the son of William Henry Wilson and Thirza Turner who married at Radford St Peter’s Church in May 1874. Their children included: Mary Ann (b.1877), Kate Elizabeth (b.1879), John Henry (b.1889) and William (b.1893). All four were born in Radford. The Wilson family lived at: 65 Outgang Lane, Radford [C.1881]; 77 Norwood Road, Radford [C.1891 & CWGC]. William Henry Wilson, who was employed as a wool card hand, probably died at Nottingham in 1940, aged 83. His wife Thirza, had predeceased him dying at Nottingham in 1918, aged 64.
He had already served three years in the 4th U.S. Cavalry when he signed up with the 11th Canadian Mounted Rifles on 14 March 1916 at Victoria, British Columbia; taken prisoner by the Germans; died on 1 November 1917 while a prisoner of war in Germany; buried at Niederzwehren Cemetery, Hessen, Germany.
On his Canadian attestation papers William Wilson claimed he was born on 26 April 1891. The evidence of the 1901 census and the General Register Office index of births suggest that he may not have been telling the truth.
