Family History

Samuel Mark Varley was born on 14th December 1891 and was the son of Samuel Arthur Varley and Alice Annie Coulby who married at St Paul’s Church, Hyson Green in June 1887. Their children included: Lily (b.1888), Nellie Violet (b.1890) and Samuel Mark (b.1892). The Varleys lived at: Churchfield Lane, Radford [C.1891]; 1 Prospect Street, Radford [C.1901]; 9 Lydia Cottages, Prospect Street, Radford [C.1911]; 9 Prospect Street, Radford [n.e.p.1.9.1916 & CWGC]. Samuel Arthur Varley, who worked as a coal miner, died at Nottingham, aged 65, in 1926. His wife, Alice Annie, died at Nottingham in 1936, aged 73.

Military History

Private Samuel Mark Varley, 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion, was killed in action 19th August 1916. He is buried in Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery.(grave ref VI.E.14).

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 20 September 1916: 'Private SM Varley (Canadians), 9 Prospect Street, Radford, killed in action age 25 (sic).' CWGC gives age at death as 24.
