Frank Steel

Sergeant Frank Steel, served with the 8th Field Ambulance, Canadian Army Medical Corps, he was killed in action on 27th October 1917. He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery. Grave Reference: XIV D 14. At the time of his enlistment at Calgary on 16th July 1915 the former waiter gave as next of kin his sister, Eliza Hodgson, of 16 Pyatt Street, Nottingham. He embarked from Halifax Canada on 1st April 1916 , disembarking at Liverpool, England on 9th April 1916. He was confirmed in the rank of Sergeant on 2nd May 1916. He embarked from England on 7th May 1916, landing at Le Harve, France the following day.

Obituary published 12th November 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STEEL. – Killed in action, October 27th, 1917, Frank, Sergt., Canadian Field Ambulance, eldest son of the late Wm. And Mary E. Steel, Cropwell Bishop, Notts. Duty nobly done. – Sorrowing sisters Mary and Eliza.” In memoriam published 26th October 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STEEL. – In loving memory of Sgt. Frank Steel, killed in action October 27th, 1917, of the Canadian Field Ambulance; also Isaac, brother of the above, [illegible] Nov. 28th, 1914. Though lost to sight to memory dear.
