William Gash was born in 1864 at Lincoln and was the son of the late John and Margaret Gash, of 32 Alberta Terrace, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1833 at Brattleby, Lincolnshire he died on 29th October 1892 aged 60 yrs and his mother Margaret Smith was born in 1832 at Nettleham, Lincolnshire, she died on 30th January 1921 aged 92 yrs. They were married on 28th June 1858 at Hull, they went on to have the following children, John b1864, Margaret b1866, William b1868 and Walter Bonner b1869, all were born in Lincoln. John Gash married his wife Kate Sibert in 1884 in Nottingham, they went on to have 3 children , Alice May b1887 she died in 1892, John b1889 and Emily Elizabeth b1894, they were all born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Myrtle Avenue, Nottingham and are shown as Margaret 82 yrs years of age a widowed dress maker, she is living with her married son John 48 yrs an optician and her single daughter Margaret Elizabeth 44 yrs, also with her two grandchildren, John 22 yrs and Emily Elizabeth 17 yrs. His previous addresses in England were 32 Alberta Terrace, Sherwood Rise, and 179 Bobbersmill Road.
Pioneer William Gash enlisted on 1st September 1915 in Victoria, Canada, he gave his age as 43 yrs and 2 months , his date of birth as 11th July 1878 and that he had been born in Lincoln, England, he was a cement worker and his next of kin was his mother Margaret of Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. He served with the 67th Battalion Canadian Pioneers, he was killed in action on 20th April 1917 he was buried in Bois Garre British Cemetery, Thelus,(Grave Reference: III.F.11). It appears that he subtracted several years from his age when he enlisted.

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 14 May 1917: 'Private W Gash (Canadians), 32 Alberta Terrace, Sherwood Rise, killed in action April 30th (sic).'
