Fred East was born in 1886 at South Scarle and was the son of William a builder and Elizabeth East née Sharpe of North Collingham. His father William was born in 1853 at Asterby, Lincolnshire, his mother Elizabeth Sharpe was born in 1855 at South Scarle, they were married in 1881 at South Scarle and went on to have 8 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, there children were Emmie b1882, John William b1883, George b1884, Tom Dakin b1886, Fred b1887, Eliza Mary b1892 and Herbert b1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at North Collingham village and are shown as William 58 yrs a builder, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 56 yrs and their children, Tom Dakin 24 yrs a plumber and Fred 23 yrs a butcher. Fred emigrated to Manitoba, Canada, on 24th June 1913 sailing from Liverpool to Montreal. On his enlistment in Canada he gave his next of kin as his wife Marion and they were living c/o King Edward Hotel, Brandon, Manitoba. His wife returned to England with their one month old son and she later re married in 1919 and became Marion Rudd (formerly East) she lived at of 23, Saxon St., Lincoln, England.
Corporal Fred East enlisted on 4th January 1916 at Brandon, Manitoba, he gave his date of birth as 3rd September 1886 and that he was a butcher, he gave his address as care of King Edward Hotel, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. His next of kin was his wife Marion of the same address. He served with the 4th battalion Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) He was killed in action on 8th October 1916 and is buried at Regina Trench Cemetery Grandecourt Somme France. grave reference. 3.A.8
His brother Private Tom Dakin East enlisted at Newark whilst residing at South Collingham he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 21st September 1917 and is buried at Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, Pas de Calais, France. grave reference IV.B.55
