Herbert Baines was born in 1880 and baptised on 29th July 1883 at St Wilfred North Muskham, he was the son of John a farm labourer and Sarah Ann Baines née Else of Norwell Village. John was born in 1844 at Weston, Sarah Ann Else in 1846 at Bathley, they were married in 1865 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they had 13 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents were living at Norwell village John 66 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 64 yrs. Herbert married Elizabeth Gittens (born 1878 Sheffield) in 1909 at Sheffield they lived at School Lane, Norwell before they emigrated to Canada

Military History

Private Herbert Baines enlisted on 7th February 1916 at Victoria, British Columbia Canada, he was 36 yrs and 6 months old, his next of kin was his wife Elizabeth of British Columbia . He served with the 102nd Bn Canadian Infantry. He died of influenza at Bramshott Hosptial on 15th February 1919 before he was demobilized and was buried at Bramshott (St Mary) Churchyard (grave ref 2.D.9)
