Family History

John Robert Hatclife was born in 1898 the son of Joshua a shepherd and Susannah Hatcliffe née Arden of Spring Bank Farm, Sutton in Ashfield, and the brother of Ernest, Rose, Grace and Winifred Hatcliffe. Joshua was born in 1858 in Lincolnshire, Susannah Arden was born in 1866 at Wragby, Lincolnshire, married on 31st March 1886 at Wragby, they went on to have 5 children, In 1911 they lived at Grange Cottage Skegby near Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Private John Robert Hatcliffe attested at Mansfield giving his age as 18 yrs and 156 days, he was a hosiery store keeper, his next of kin was his mother Susannah, posted to the reserves his was mobilised for war on 21st February 1917 at Derby. He embarked from Folkstone on 1st October 1917 landing at Boulogne the following day. He was posted to the 13th battalion Durham Light Infantry on 30th October 1917 and died of wounds on 8th October 1918 at the 55 Casualty Clearing, France. He is buried at Doingt Communal Cemetery extension France.
