William Lowe was born in 1890 at Westwood and was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Ann Lowe née Clarke. His father Samuel was born in 1853 in Beeston and his mother Elizabeth Ann Clarke was born in 1863 in Westwood. They were married in 1885 (Basford Registration District) and had seven children, sadly one was to die in infancy. Their surviving children who were all born in Westwood were Christopher b1886, Samuel b1889, William b1890, Florence b1893, Emma b1900 and Harry b1902. In the 1911 census the family was shown living at New Westwood, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire: Samuel 58 yrs a bricklayers labourer, his wife Elizabeth Ann 48 yrs and their children, Christopher 25 yrs, Samuel 22 yrs and William 21 yrs who were all coal miners, Florence 18 yrs who was helping at home, and Emma 11 yrs and Harry 9 yrs who were both school age.
Sergeant William Lowe enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 17th battalion, Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in the trenches near Givenchy and is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'Avoue (grave ref III.H.10).
The deaths of two Nottinghamshire County Police officers was reported to the local authority on 15th July 1916 and published in the Nottingham Daily Express on 17th July 1916 :- 'The deaths of two Nottinghamshire County Police officers was reported to the local authority on 15th July 1916. “TWO NOTTS. POLICEMEN SOLDIERS FALL. “It was reported at a meeting of the Notts. Standing Joint Committee held at Nottingham Shire Hall on Saturday, [15th July 1916] Sir Ernest Paget presiding, that two more policemen-soldiers had been killed in action. The men are Company-Sergeant-Major Reginald Anstey, of the Nottingham headquarters, and Sergeant William Lowe, of the Hucknall station, both single men and of the Sherwood Foresters.” Above item courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918.
