Leonard Herbert Allen was born in 1898 in Nottingham and was the son of William Frederick Allen and Eliza Ann (Hannah) Allen née Sparham of Glencarron Villa, Wilford, Nottingham. His father William Frederick Allen was born in 1856 at Belper, Derbyshire, his mother Eliza Ann (Hannah) Sparham was born in 1857 at Wymswold, Leicestershire, they were married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they went on to have the following children, Gertrude b1879, James b1883, Charles b1884, Fred William b1891, Edgar b1895 and Leonard Henry b 1898 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Wilford village and are shown as William Frederick 55 yrs a machine builder, he is living with is wife Hannah 54 yrs and their children Fred William 20 yrs a book keeper, Edgar 16 yrs a scholar and Leonard Herbert 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Leonard Herbert Allen enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd, (Prince of Wales’ Own) battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment he was killed in action between 28th March 1918 and 2nd April 1918, aged 19. He is buried in Assevillers New British Cemetery. France grave reference VI. C. 10.
