Family History

George Jackson was born in 1882 a Burton Joyce and was the son of the late Frederick a coal dealer and Ann Jackson of Burton Joyce, Nottingham. His father Frederick was born in 1849 in Burton Joyce and died in 1889 aged 41 yrs his mother Ann was born in 1849 at Gunthorpe, they were married in 1870 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District. They went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Burton Joyce, Thomas b1871, Frederick b1873, Henry b1875, Emma b1877, Elizabeth b1880, George 1882 and Richard b1883. In the 1911 census George is living at Main Street, Burton Joyce , he is shown as being 30 yrs single and a carters labourer, he is living with his married brother Thomas 39 yrs a carter and general carrier and his wife Elizabeth Ann and their 7 children.

Military History

Private George Jackson enlisted on 20November 1915 at Nottingham /11/1915 under the Derby Scheme. He gave his age as 34 yrs and 4 months, he was a carter giving his address as Main Street, Burton Joyce and his next of kin was his mother Ann of Robey Cottages, Bunbury Street, Nottingham. He was mobilised 27th August 1916 and posted to 1/7th battalion West Riding Regiment on 29th August, he embarked from Folkstone on 29th August 1916 landing in Boulogne the same day, he went to Etaples camp and joined his unit, in the field on 14th September 1916. He was killed in action on 17th September 1916 and is buried in Lansdale Cemetery, Authuille, Somme, France, grave reference LX.F.10
