Joseph Ernest Turner was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the son of George Walter Flannagan Turner a boiler maker of 11 of Tenter Buildings, Newark. His father was born in 1872 at Nottingham and he married his wife Emily Ada Hancock (b1873 at Nottingham) in 1898 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Tenter Buildings, Appleton Gate, Newark and are shown as George Walter 39 yrs a boiler maker, he is living with his wife Emily Ada 38 yrs a lace hand and his son Joseph Ernest 17 yrs a lather boy.
Corporal Joseph Ernest Turner enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Newark, he initially served with the service number 21159 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 whilst serving with the 11th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published on 20th April 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Only son of Mr & Mrs Turner, who up to six months ago resided in Tenter Buildings and now live at Nottingham. Deceased, before joining up in the early days of the war, was apprenticed to Mr Newbold, hairdresser, Northgate. The first intimation the parents was received was from the Corporal’s cousin, who said he saw him killed and later a letter from his C.Q.M.S. “During the past two years we have been together we always found him to be one of the best – a true British soldier”.
