Edward Hembrough was born in 1898 in Derby and was the son of Edward Henry a retail drapers assistant and Florence Annie Hembrough née Mather of 102 Stanley Road Nottingham. His father Edward Henry was born in 1875 in Manchester and his mother Florence Annie Mather was born in 1876 in Derby, they were married in 1897 in Derby and went on to have 6 children, two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Derby and were, Edward b1899, Eveline b1903, Olive b1907 and Douglas b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at 102 Stanley Road, Nottingham and are shown as Edward 36 yrs a retail drapers assistant, he is living with his wife Florence 35 yrs and their children Edward 12 yrs, Eveline 8 yrs, Olive 4 yrs and Douglas 2 yrs.
Private Edward Hembrough, enlisted at Grove Park, Kent whilst residing at Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. He initially served with the service number 304359 in the Army Service Corps , he was later transferred to the East Surrey Regiment and attached 1/23rd Battalion London Regiment. He was killed in action on 9th May 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
He was born A/M/J/1898 so may have been 20 when killed. In memoriam published 9th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HEMBROUGH. – In loving memory of our dear son, Eddie, who fell in action in France, May 10th, 1918.
