Fred was born at Misterton in 1880, he was the son of Henry and Sarah Kitching (nee Barthorpe). His father was a brick maker. He had two elder brothers George born 1872 and William born 1875.
He arrived in Gallipoli on 28 August 1915 and was probably one of the 10% kept back in Mudros during the battalion's first battles. He was killed in action on 14 November 1915 and is buried in Azmak Cemetery, grave I.D.4. From Monday 8th until 15th November, the battalion was in the front line in the Lone Tree Gully sector around Leather Lane, near Oxford Circus and Oxford Street, just behind Jephson's Post.
