Family History

Samuel Bailey was born in 1871 in Nottingham, he married his wife Sarah McLeod in 1886 in Nottingham and they had a son Douglas Wilford born in 1901 in Derby. In the 1901 census the family are living at Chapel Lane Flintham, Nottinghamshire and are shown as Sam 30 yrs a police constable he is living with his wife Sarah 27 yrs and their son Douglas 7 months old. His wife Sarah died in 1903 aged 30 yrs the death was recorded in the Basford Registration District. In the 1911 census Samuel now a widow is living at 67 Mount Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, he is shown as being head of the household, 40 yrs a widow, he is now a Police Sergeant, he is living with his son Douglas Wilford 10 yrs and Rose Tucker 48 yrs also a widow , she is a housekeeper.

Military History

Formerly sergeant, South Notts Hussars, Samuel served with the Imperial Yeomanry and later the Territorial Force for 20 years. He was deemed to have enlisted in the Territorial Force on 7 April 1908 and was discharged (sick) on 11 May 1915 before he was due to serve overseas. He returned to work as a police sergeant and was killed in the explosion at the National Shell Filling Factory, Chilwell. He is buried in Hucknall General Cemetery

Article published on 13th May 1915 in the Hucknall Dispatch :- “Sergt. Bailey was until last week associated with the South Notts. Hussars having been given his discharge owing to ill-health, which has prevented further riding. He has been in the Hussars for 20 years, and would have gone abroad some weeks ago were it not for an internal complaint, which necessitated an operation.
