George Alfred was born in 1881 the son of William, a coal miner, and Mary A Spencer. He married Ethel Draper on 30th May 1909 in Fermoy, Ireland. They had four children, Frederick George born 29th August 1908 Derby, Ethel Edith born 8th October 1909 Fermoy, Kathleen born 19th April 1912 Nottingham and Leslie born 14th February 1915 Nottingham. In 1911, they were living in Sherwood Foresters' married quarters at 28 Whiteleigh Terrace, Crownhill, Plymouth. George Alfred was serving with the Notts & Derbys Regiment. Ethel was awarded a weekly pension of 23 shillings for herself and four children with effect from 17th April 1916. At the time of George's death she was living at 37, Shipstone Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham.
George Alfred Spencer re-enlisted at Nottingham on 17th September 1912 aged 31. He had previously served with the Sherwood Foresters for 12 years and left when his time was expired. He served with the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 24th February 1915 and to Corporal on 20th March 1915. He landed in France on 11th November 1914. Spencer's birth was registered J/A/S/1881 so he may have been 33 when killed.
