George Henry Wise

George Henry was the son of George and Fanny Wise. His father, George, was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and his mother, Fanny, was born in Thetford, Norfolk. There are discrepancies in his parent's ages on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census. His father's age was given as 40 on the 1901 Census but there is a record of the birth of a George Wise in Stamford in 1868 (J/A/S). On the 1891 Census a 23 year-old George Wise, born in Stamford, and employed as a wheelwright, was living in the town with his widowed mother, Rosina Wise. One of his siblings was a brother, Walter, aged 13, who in 1901 was living with George in Salford but on this census Walter's age was given as 20. Fanny's age on the 1901 Census was given as 25 while on the 1911 Census she gave her age as 40. George and Fanny had five surviving children, one child had died either in infancy or early childhood. All the children were born in Salford, Manchester: George Henry (birth registered 1895 J/F/M), James William (b. 1895, birth registered J/F/M 1896, baptised 15 January 1896 at Salford Stowell Memorial Church), Arthur Ewart (b. 31 May 1898), Harry (birth registered 1900, J/F/M) and Catherine Fanny (b. 16 November 1903). In 1901 George and Fanny were living at 13 Race Street, Salford, Lancashire. George was a wheelwright. He and Fanny had four sons; George (5), James, known as 'Willie' (5), Arthur (3) and Harry (1). Also in the household was George's brother, Walter (b. Stamford), whose occupation was given as gold digger/miner. By 1911 the family had moved to Nottingham. On the census, Fanny described herself as married but the head of the household. Her husband has not yet been traced on the 1911 census. Apart from her four sons, Fanny now had a daughter, Catherine, known as Katie. Katie (7) and her brother Harry (11) were still at school but George (16) was a wheelwright, Willie (15) was an errand boy for a pork butcher, and Arthur (12) was a greengrocer. When Willie joined the Army in 1916 the family was living at 53 Leicester Street, St Ann's, Nottingham. Both Willie and Arthur served in the war. Willie, who was a 'maker up' for a pork butcher, attested in 1916 and joined the Royal Field Artillery (781117 Gunner) and was mobilized on 25 April 1916, serving in France from 7 January 1917. In 1918 he was granted furlough from 17 March-31 March but returned to France two days late and was awarded 14 days Field Punishment. He was discharged from the Army in April 1919. Arthur, who was now working as a lace maker, joined the Royal Navy on 4 January 1917 (J64382 Ordinary Seaman). He was drafted to HMS Castor on 26 March 1917 and his last service dates was 25 June 1919. George's father probably died in Nottingham in 1941 at the age of 72. Of George's siblings: Willie married Eliza Charlesworth at Nottingham register office on 6 April 1916, a month after he attested. They had a daughter, Joyce May, on 14 May 1919. The family was living in Pinxton, Derbyshire, when he was discharged from the Army. He died in 1968 (registered December, Mansfield) aged 72. Arthur died in 1972 (death registered March, Nottingham) aged about 73. Harry married Minnie M Hutchinson in 1928 (marriage registered J/A/S Nottingham). He died in Nottingham on 12 August 1952 aged 52. Probate: 'Wise Harry of 198 Minver-crescent Aspley Nottingham died 12 August 1952 Administration Nottingham 13 September to Minnie May Wise widow. Effects £204 15s. 9d.' Catherine Fanny married Albert EA Taylor in 1926 (A/M/J Nottingham) and died in 1980 (registered December, Nottingham) aged 77.
