Alfred Bishop was the son of Alfred Bishop and Fanny Mitchell who had married at Nottingham in 1884. Six of their children were alive at the time of the 1911 census. They were: Mabel (b.1884), George (b.1886), Alfred (b.1890), Annie (b.1893), Elizabeth Nellie (b.1897) and Ada (b.1899). All were born in the Nottingham area. Alfred Bishop senior had worked as a labourer, hosiery worker but latterly had been employed as a postman. He died in Nottingham aged 61 in 1923. His wife, Fanny, had predeceased him, dying in Nottingham aged 53 in 1918. The family homes given in the various censuses were: 15 Camden Street, Sneinton [C.1891]; 10 Calcutta Street, St Ann’s [C.1901], 33 Pym Street, St Ann’s [C.1911]. In 1916 Alfred Bishop junior married Alice May Fisher. The address given for Alice after Alfred’s death was 28 Player Street, Radford (her parents’ home) [n.e.p.12.12.1916]. She subsequently married Thomas Watson at Nottingham in 1920. It would appear that she died in the Southwell registration district aged 81 in 1973
Bishop was called for service and following training he was drafted to France. The 17th battalion (Welbeck Rangers) took part in the Battle pf the Somme, and on 16/10/1916 they were in the front line at Thiepval where Bishop was killed in action. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
In memoriam published 19th October 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BISHOP. – In loving memory of L.-Cpl. A. Bishop, killed in action October 19th, 1916.
