Leonard Davis Allen

Leonard Davis Allen was born in Southwell in 1894 he was the only son of Joseph Davis a carter and straw merchant and Elizabeth Emma Allen, née Simpson, of 86 St Peters Street, Radford Nottingham. His father Joseph Davis was born in 1868 at South Scarle and his mother Elizabeth Emma Simpson was born in 1868 at Matlock, they were married in 1889 at Southwell and went on to have 9 children sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Agnes Mary b1891 South Scarle, Leonard Davis b1895 Southwell, Ethel Elizabeth b1897 Whitwell, Dorothy Lucy b1901 Nottingham, Edith Gertrude b1903 Nottingham, Ivy b1906 Nottingham, and Blanch Adelaide (The middle family name of Davis derived from Leonard’s grandmother’s maiden name.) In the 1911 census the family were living at 86 Peter Street, Radford, Nottingham and are shown as Joseph Davis Allen 43 yrs a carter and straw merchant, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Emma 43 yrs and their children , Agnes Mary 20 yrs working in a lace warehouse, Leonard Davis 16 yrs a Shredder in a lace factory, Ethel Elizabeth 14 yrs an errand girl, Dorothy Lucy 10 yrs a scholar, Edith Gertrude 8 yrs a scholar, Ivy 5 yrs and Blanche Adelaide 3 yrs.
