Normanton on Trent - St Matthew's Church

St Matthew's Church, Tuxford Road,, Normanton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, NG23 6RN. The memorial is at the west end of the churchyard. Obelisk on square three stepped base, column has a victor's wreath carved on the south face, lead lettering. Inscription reads: 'To the Glory of God and in grateful memory of the young men of this parish who fell in the Great War1914-1918 (names) Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. St John 15.13' The memorial was unveiled on 14th April 1921 by Col. O.J. Huskinson, dedication by Rev. E.M. Turner, Vicar of Normanton on Trent, designed and made by Sharpe & Hoggard of Retford, cost was £130. Historic information source(s): Retford Times, 15th April 1921. The name of one man who died in the Second World War has been added to the memorial (Lieut. PG Turner, Notts Yeomanry/Sherwood Rangers RAC, killed El Alamein, 24 October 1942).
