Ernest Walsham was born in 1898 at Derby, he was the son of the late Arthur James Harry Walsham a railway porter and Annie Mary Walsham née Mudford, of The Plough Inn, Grassthorpe, Newark, Notts. His father Arthur was born in 1871 in London, he died in 1905 at Derby aged 34 yrs, his mother Annie Mary Mudford was born in 1871 at Grassthorpe, they were married on 30th July 1893 at All Saints Church, Battle Bridge, they had a further son William born 1896 at Derby. In the 1911 census his widowed mother Annie Walsham 37 yrs is a house keeper and visitor at Grassthorpe, Newark, she is living with her 2 sons William 14 yrs and Ernest 12 yrs both scholars they are all visiting Maria Morley 6 yrs a widow and Inn Keeper

Military History

Private Ernest Walsham enlisted at Newark, served with the 2/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.he was killed in action on 26th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on theTyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A.
