Alfred Swingler was the son of Alfred Swingler and Emma Louisa Fuller who married at Leicester in 1868. Their children included: Charles Fuller (b.1869), Florence (b.1871), Edward (b.1873), Louisa Ann (b.1874), George Harry (b.1878), Alice (b.1880) and Alfred (b.1882). The Swingler family lived at: Orchard Street, Radford [C.1871]; 7 Salisbury Street, Old Radford [C.1881]; 27 Salisbury Street, Old Radford [C.1891]; 45 Radford Boulevard [C.1901]; 17 Trafalgar Street, Radford [C.1911]. In the death notice placed in the local newspaper for Private Alfred Swingler his father’s address was still 17 Trafalgar Street [n.e.p.22.7.1916]. Alfred Swingler senior, who worked as an iron turner, died at Nottingham, aged 73, in 1919. His widow, Emma Louisa, died in Nottingham, aged 78, in 1923. In 1909 Alfred Swingler junior married Rachel Dessaur at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the couple were living at 49 Bramcote Street, Radford. They don’t appear to have had any children. In the above-mentioned death notice his widow’s address was given as 37 Bramcote Street, Radford. She died in the Sherwood Hospital, Nottingham, having never remarried, in February 1972, aged 85.
He enlisted at Nottingham; killed in action; he was buried in the Garden Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-la-Boiselle, Somme, France.
In memoriam published 7th July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SWINGLER. – In loving memory of Pte. Alfred Swingler, killed in action July 7th, 1916; also Charles Fuller Swingler, died May 8th, 1902.
