Alfred Thomas Short

Alfred Thomas Short was the only surviving child of Thomas Short and Jane Amelia Adams who married in the Steyning registration district in Sussex in 1880. The Short family lived at various addresses in Portslade by the Sea, Sussex including: 5 George Street [C.1881]; 14 George Street [C.1891]; 17 Camden Street [C.1901 & C.1911]. Jane Amelia Short died in 1912, aged 62 and her husband,Thomas, who was a labourer at a gas works, died in 1916, aged 68. Just before Thomas Short died, his son Alfred, married Milly Williams at Radford St Peter’s Church on 17 July 1916. In the marriage register his occupation was given as labourer now soldier but in all likelihood he was actually working at the Chilwell Shell Filling Factory. At the time of her marriage to Alfred Short, Milly Williams was a widow with three young children. As Milly Towle she had married Benjamin Williams in 1906 but Benjamin had died in 1915 aged 31. As the electoral register for 1918 reveals Alfred Short and his new family lived at 61 Grimston Road, Radford. In 1919 there was only Milly Short listed there as a voter. She subsequently married William Dawes at Nottingham in 1920 and eventually died at Nottingham, aged 66, in 1951.
