Family History

Harold Millns was born in 1896 at North Collingham and was the son of Thomas Nicholson a bricklayer and Emma Millns née Longbottom of Low Street, North Colingham. His father was born in 1864 at North Colingham, his mother Emma Longbottom was also born in 1864 at Newark, they were married in 1885 their marriage was registered in the Newark registration district, they went on to have the following children, Tom b1888, John Edward b1889, Eva b1891 and Harold b1896, all the children were born in North Collingham. In the 1911 censuis the family are living at Low Street, North Collingham and are shown as Tom Nicholson 47 yrs a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Emma 47 yrs and their children Tom 23 yrs a bricklayer, John Edward 22 yrs working in farming, Eva 20 yrs no occupation listed and Harold 15 yrs working on a farm

Military History

Private Harold Millns enlisted at Newark, he initially served with the service number 53617 in the Lincolnshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 15th December 1916 at War Hospital Napsbury whilst serving with the 15th battalion The Prince of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) He is buried at North Collingham (All Saints) Churchyard, Nottinghamshire

Extra Information

His brother John Edward Millns also served during the Great War, he attested on 2nd March 1916 and was called up on 6th December 1917 at Retford, he was posted on 8th December 1917 as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was found unsuitable to his role in the Royal Garrison Artillery and transferred on 21st June 1918 to Agricultural Labour battalion, Labour Corps. He was discharged from the Army on 29th July 1919 and issued with a Silver War Badge number B267967.
