Edward was born in Sutton in Ashfield in 1862,he was married in 1887 to his wife Maria Hardy the marriage was recorded in the Basford District, Maria had been born in 1862 in Arnold. They went on to have 4 children, however sadly one died in infancy or childhood, their surviving children were: William b1894, Jessie b1898 and Elsie b1899 all three children were born in Sutton in Ashfield. In the 1901 census Edward and his family are living at 32 Station Street, Sutton in Ashfield. By the time of the 1911 census Edward and his family have moved into the Arnold area and are living at Gedling Lane, Arnold, and are shown as Eward 48 yrs head of the family 48 yrs a coal miner , he is living with his wife Maria 48 yrs and their children Willie 17 yrs single and a coal miner, Jessie 13 yrs a hosiery hand and Elsie 12 yrs a scholar.
A service record has been found, showing him joining the Army on 23rd Decemebr 1881 at Halifax when he joined the West Riding Regiment. He gave his age as 19 yrs and 2 months, his religion as that of Church of England. He served for 12 yrs and was discharged on 22nd December 1893. After war had been declared he re enlisting in Nottingham and although shown as serving with the 3rd battalion in the Commonwealth War Graves records he in fact died whilst serving at the regimental Depot at Halifax, Yorks. He had suffered from a succession of illnesses and died at St Lukes Hospital, Halifax of a cerebral haemorrhage on 5th August 1918. He was 56 years of age at the time of his death (one would have thought well over age for any active service and perhaps then he was with the “Home Guard”) He left a widow, son and two daughters. He is buried at Arnold, Redhill cemetery
