George Stephen Baines was born in 1876 at Melton Mowbray and was the son of Richard Baines and Jane Wesson, who married at Melton Mowbray in 1872. He had three sisters; Mary Ann, born in 1873, Sarah Elizabeth, born in 1879 and Louisa, born in 1881. All were born in Melton Mowbray. He married his wife Rose Lillian Eddersahw in 1897 at Nottingham, they went on to have 3 children, Charles Vernon b1899, Violet Helen b1902, and George Stephen b1904, all were born in Radford they lived at The Radford Liberal Club, Denison Street, Nottingham. In the 1911 census they are living at the Radford Liberal Club, Denison Street, Nottingham and are shown as George Baines 35 yrs manager of the liberal club, he is living with his wife Rose Lillian 31 yrs manageress of the liberal club and their children, Charles Vernon 12 yrs, Violet Helen 9 yrs and George Stephen 7 yrs. At the time of his death the family were living at 61 Garfield Road, Radford, Nottingham.
Pte. Baines enlisted in Nottingham and joined the Army Service Corps Motor Transport attached to 96th Army Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was drafted to France, but died there of pneumonia on 11/11/1918. He was buried at Y Farm Military Cemetery, Bois Grenier.
Death notices published 30th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BAINES. – Died November 11th, of pneumonia, in France, Pte. G. S. Baines, M.T., A.S.C., the beloved husband of R. L. Baines, 61 Garfield-road, Radford, aged 42. When alone in sorrow bitter tears flow, there stealeth a dream of sweet long ago, unknown to the world he stands by my side, and whispers, dear wife, death cannot divide. – From sorrowing wife and children. “BAINES. – Died in France of pneumonia, November 11th, our beloved brother, Pte. George Baines, A.S.C., M.T. A loving brother, true and kind, beautiful memories left behind, for King and country he did his best.
