Alfred Wright was born in 1898 in Nottingham and was the son of Alfred Herbert a cycle worker and Margaret Wright née Earley of 1 Eden Terrace North Gate New Basford Nottingham. His father Alfred Herbert was born in 1870 in Nottingham and his mother Margaret Earley was born in 1874 in Paisley, Scotland, they were married in 1892 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Nottingham, Martha Florence b1894, Alfred b1898, Mabel b1901 and William b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Eden Yard, North Gate, New Basford, Nottingham and are shown as Alfred Herbert 41 yrs a cycle worker, he is living with his wife Margaret 37 yrs a lace mender and their children Martha Florence 17 yrs a lace finisher, Alfred 13 yrs a newsboy and scholar, Mabel 10 yrs a scholar and William 3 yrs.
Private Alfred Wright, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), he was killed in action on 23rd June 1916 and is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery.
In memoriam published 23rd June 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WRIGHT. – In faithful remembrance of Alfred Wright, Sherwood Foresters, killed in France June 23rd, 1916, aged 19 years. A noble young hero, he died fighting bravely for his country. – From H. Tomlin. “WRIGHT. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Alfred Wright, 1/7th Sherwood Foresters, killed in action on the 23rd June, 1916, in his 19th year. Ever in our thoughts. – Father, mother, sisters, and brother. “”WRIGHT. – In loving memory of Pte. Alfred Wright, Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action June 23rd, 1916.
