George was born in 1892 at Pleasley, but lived in Laxton , he was the adopted son of Thomas and Martha Bagshaw who lived at the Church Alms Houses in Laxton. In the 1901 census he is shown as living at the Church Alms houses in Laxton he is 9 years of age and a scholar , Thomas is 77 years of age and Marhta 72 years.

Military History

George enlisted in Retford and gave his residence as Mansfield Woodhouse and his place of birth as Pleasley . He served with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire regiment , he went to France on 28th July 1915 (medal index card ) and was killed in action on 10th December 1915 and is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen,Belgium. grave reference III. C.3

Pte G W Saxelby Retford Times 4 Feb 1916 Last week we recorded the death of Pte G W Saxelby of the 7th Lincolnshire Regiment, whose photo we produce above. The deceased joined the army in January 1915 and met his death on the 10th December. He had spent nearly all his life in Laxton being bought up by Mr Thomas Bagshaw. The deceased’s father, Mr Geo Saxelby, Mansfield Woodhouse is serving with the Navy and his brother Thomas was in the same regiment as the deceased and was only a few yards from the spot where he fell.
