Robert Haydn was born in 1895 in Basford and was the son of Robert a fried fish shop owner and Annie Haslam née Bell of 48 North Gate New Basford Nottingham. His father Robert was born in 1863 in Bulwell, his mother Annie Bell had been born in 1868 in Wiland, Devon, they were married in 1888 in Nottingham, they had a further son Eric Edward born 2nd February 1905 and a daughter Annie Bell Haslam born in 1910. In the 1901 census they were living at Northgate, Nottingham , it has not been possible to trace the family on the 1911 census.
Private Robert Haydn Haslam, enlisted in Nottingham on 28th September 1914, he gave his age as 19 yrs. and 31 days, he initially served with the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire) Regiment with service number 405. He was later transferred to the 122nd Company Machine Gun Corps landing in France on 14th August 1916 . On the 14th March 1917 in the 17th Casualty Clearing Station France, he died of wounds after receiving a gun shot wound to his chest, he is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.(grave ref XI.B.37A).
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 19 March 1917: 'Haslam. Died of wounds March 15th (sic) 1917, Private Robert Haydn Haslam age 21, of North gate, Basford. Father, mother, brother, sister.' Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 14th March 1918 :- “HASLAM. – In memory of Pte. R. H. Haslam, M.G.C., killed in action March 14th, 1917. Ever in our thoughts. – Father, mother, sister and brother. “HASLAM. – In loving memory of Pte. H. Haslam, died of wounds March 14th, 1917.
