Harold Mawby was born in 1895 in the Chesterfield Registration District and was the son of Benjamin a boot repairer and Harriett Hawkins nee Barrows of 78 Egypt Road Basford, Nottingham. His father Benjamin was born in 1864 in Nottingham , his mother Harriett Barrows was also born in 1864 in Mansfield, they were married in 1885 in Mansfield and went on to have 5 children , all born in Mansfield (except Harold who was born in Chesterfield) their children were William b1886, Florence b1888, Martha Ann b1890, Benjamin Dowse b1892 and Harold Mawby b1895. In the 1911 census the family are living at 78 Egypt Road, Nottingham and are shown as Benjamin 47 yrs a boot repairer, he is living with his wife Harriett 47 yrs and three of their children, Martha Ann 21 yrs a carriage straightener in lace manufacturing, Benjamin Dowse 19 yrs a compositor in printing works and Harold Mawby a telegraph messenger working for the General Post Office. At the time of his death Harold was engaged to May. His brothers William and Benjamin also served.
Lance Corporal Harold Mawby Hawkins, enlisted in Nottingham served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He landed in France on 27th October 1915 and died of wounds on 29th May 1916. He was buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, (grave ref. I.D.4).
