Edward was born in Sturton le Steeple in 1896 the son of Edward a general builder and bricklayer and Elizabeth Hipkin, of Vicarage Lane Sturton-le-Steeple Retford. In 1911 the family was living at Vicarage Lane Edward had a younger brother Harold Charles and younger sister Emma Ellen.
Edward enlisted in Derby in October 1916 and went to France in December 1916. He was seriously wounded in May 1917 and spent some months recovering. Chambrecy British Cemetery France, Grave Reference: III B 1
Pte E G Hipkin Retford Times 16th Aug1918 On Saturday morning last, Mr and Mrs Hipkin received the sad news from the War Office, that their son, Pte E G Hipkin was killed in action in France on July 20th. He joined the K.O.Y.L.I. in October 1916 and proceeded to France at Christmas of the same year. He was wounded rather seriously in May 1917 and spent some months in hospital owing to septic poisoning. He was a pupil teacher in the Sturton Parochial School and at the time he joined the forces was a student in Westminster Training College. He was of a bright and cheerful disposition, a great favourite of all who knew him and seemed to have before him the prospect of a useful and successful career.
