Family History

George was born in 1895 in Plumbtree, Nottingham and was the son of George Alfred a market and landscape gardener and Annie Ruffles (nee Brammer ) who lived at 233 Mapperley Plains, Nottingham. George and Annie had three children in total , Mary, George Henry and Doris. In the 1901 census the family are living on The Bank , Woodborough, however by the 1911 census they are living on Mapperley Plains. George is 16 years and is assisting in his fathers gardening business.

Military History

He enlisted in Birmingham and The Nottingham Evening Post of Friday August 25th 1916, tells us that George had previously served with the Robin Hood Battalion of The Sherwood Foresters. However, at some time he had been transferred into the Warwickshire Regiment and promoted to Company Sergeant Major with their 11th Battalion. He was killed in action during an attack on Pozieres. His body was never identified and he has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, Pier and face 9A, 9B and 10B.

Death notice published 5th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “RUFFLES. – Killed in action, July 16th, Act.-Coy.-Sergt.-Major G. H. Ruffles, Royal Warwicks, only son of G. and A.
