William Peat was born in 1889 he was the son of John a cotton bleacher and Emma Peat née Johnson of 17 Common Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse. (Common Lane is now called Vale Road.) Both John and Emma Johnson were was born in 1852 at Mansfield Woodhouse, they were married on 28th October 1872 at St Edmunds Church Mansfield Woodhouse, they went on to have 8 children. In 1911 the family lived at 25 Pleasley Vale, Mansfield Woodhouse, John 59 yrs is a cotton bleacher he is living with his wife Emma 59 yrs and 5 of their children, including Alfred 29 yrs a coal miner and William 22 yrs a mill hand.
Private William Peat enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 12/13th battalion Northumberland fusiliers, he was taken a prisoner of war and died on 12th October 1918 he is buried at Niederzwenren, Kassell, Germany.
His brother Private Alfred Peat enlisted on 1st September 1914 at Mansfield giving his age as 32 yrs and 136 days old, he was a coal miner. Posted to the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment he landed in France on 29th July 1915, He was killed in action on 14th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial,
