Family History

Harry Wilkinson was born in 1884 in the Meadows and was the son of Isaac a road asphalter and Ellen Wilkinson née Lee of 4 Eugene Street, Nottingham. His father Isaac was born in 1844 at Wollaton and his mother Ellen Lee was born in 1842 also at Nottingham, they were married in 1867 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, John William b1868, Elizabeth b1875, Arthur b1876, Albert b1879, Isaac b1880, Harry b1883 and Harry b1884. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Eugene Street, Nottingham and were shown as Isaac 67 yrs a road asphalter, he is living with his wife Ellen 69 yrs and their son Harry 29 yrs a cotton mill labourer. Harry married Gertrude Towle (born 1st May 1883) in 1913 at Nottingham, they lived at 39 Baldwin Street, Radford, Nottingham they went on to have a son Hedley born 4th January 1915. Following his death his widow Gertrude was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week which commenced on 5th March 1917.

Military History

Private Harry Wilkinson enlisted at Nottingham; he served witht he 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, Commemorated: Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
