Thomas was born in Daybrook in 1895 he was the son of Henry a brewery drayman and Jane Terry née Wealthall. His father Henry was born in 1859 in Dayrook and his mother Jane Weathall was born in 1869 in Edingley, Nottinghamshire. They were married in 1886 in Nottingham and went on to have 4 children 2 of whom died in infancy or childhood prior to 1911 , their only other surviving child was Ann born in 1897 in Daybook. His father died in 1903 in Nottingham aged 44 yrs. By the 1911 Census following his father death his mother Jane went to live with her father Francis Wetherell at the Burwell Arms public house, Winkburn near Southwell he was 65 yrs and a widow and a publican and farmer , also living at the address was his mother unmarried brother Charles Wealthall 31 years , who was a farm worker.
Private Thomas Terry enlisted in Newark, he attested on 22nd January 1915 for the duration of the war. He was single and his age was 20 yrs and 4 months.That he enlisted at Newark, into the 8th battalion, Sherwood Foresters is quite normal for the 8th battalion headquarters were based in the town. He was embodied on 20th April 1916 and transferred to 1/8th battalion on 28th June 1915 and embarked from Southampton on the same date he landed in Rouen the following day. It was not long before the battalion was sent into the trenches and between the 14th and 17th April 1916 they were in a rest area near Locre, moving into the Front Line at Lindenhoek on the 18th where they remained until relieved on the 22nd. Casualties for this period in the trenches were 2 killed and 10 wounded. Thomas was one of those wounded , he was admitted to 30th Casualty clearing station on 18th April 1916 with gun shot wounds to the back and buttocks, he subsequently died from these wounds on 20th April 1916. He is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France
