He was the son of Alfred William and Selina Cooke nee Shooter and the brother of Elsie and Winnie May Cooke. In 1911 they lived at 234a Alfreton Road Nottingham. Alfred and Selina later lived at 127 Logan Street Bulwell Nottingham. His father Alfred William was born in Baston, Lincolnshire in 1874 and his mother Selina Shooter was born in 1874 in Newstead, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1895 in Bourne Lincolnshire and went on to have 3 children, Elsie b1895 Baston, Charles William b 1897 Alfreton, Derbyshire and Winnie May b1908 Nottinghamshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at 234A Alfreton Road, Nottingham and are shown as Alfred William 37 yrs a motor van driver, he is living with his wife Selina 37 yrs and their children Elsie 15 yrs , Charles William 13 yrs a scholar and Vernie May 3 yrs.
Pte. Charles William Cooke, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. He landed in the Balkans on 3rd October 1915. He was killed in action on 28th January 1917, on the Western Front. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
