He was the son of Albert and Caroline Smith and the brother of Lewis, Albert, Charles Wallace, Joseph Leonard, Elizabeth, Fanny, Arthur, George and Frederick Smith. In 1911 they lived at 5 Gilead Street Bulwell Nottingham.
