Frederick Charles Staley

Known as Charles. He was born about 1884 the son of George and Mary E. Staley (nee Hall) who had married at St John, Newhall, on 24 December 1872. George was born in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, about 1854 and was a coal miner. In 1911 George and Mary completed the census that they had been married for 38 years and had had 14 children born alive of whom 11 were still living. Twelve children were named in the household on the census between 1881 and 1911: Maria E (b. Swadlincote), John C (b. Swadlincote), George (b. Newhall), Ellen, Eliza, Edith, Charles (Frederick Charles), Ernest, Florence, Addy, Elsie and William; the younger children were all born in Bulwell. In 1881 George (26) and Mary (28) were living at 57 Duchess Street, Bulwell, with their five children, Maria (10), John (7), George (5), Ellen (3) and Eliza (1). By 1891 they had moved to 25 Bradford Street, Bulwell; eight children were in the household on the night of the census; Maria, Ellen, Eliza, Edith (9), (Frederick) Charles (7), Ernest (5), Florence (3) and Addy (1). They had moved again by 1901, this time to 181 Cinder Hill, Bulwell, and only six children were at home on the night of the census; George, Ernest, Florence, Addy, Elsie (5) and William (3). They were still at the same address ten years later in 1911, this time only four children were in the household; Charles, Ernest, Elsie and William. Frederick married Ellen Pippin, the daughter of Thomas and Fanny Pippin of Bulwell, in 1912 (registered Apr/May/June) and they were living in Bulwell when he was killed in 1916. In 1901 at the age of 14 Ellen was a domestic servant in the home of a widow, Miriam Wood, who lived with her son, Edward, and elderly sister-in-law, Fanny Wood, at Holly Cottage. Also in the household were three boarders. By 1911 Ellen was a cook at a private nursing home at 19 Regent Street, Nottingham. It seems that Ellen never remarried as an Ellen Staley b. abt. 1878 died aged 75 in Nottingham in 1953. Charles' father died in 1921 age 67 and his mother in 1928 age 75.
