George James Shephard was born in 1897, baptised on 4th April 1897 at St Andrews Church, Langar he was the son of the late George a steam crane driver and Mary Ann Shephard née Collier of Water Lane, Radcliffe on Trent. George was born in 1859 at Car Colston, he died in 1905 aged 46 yrs Mary Ann Collier was born in 1860 at Hereford, they were married on 2nd September 1884 at Upton on Severn Registry office, they had 5 children. In the 1911 census George James is aged 14, he is living in Barnstone with mother Mary, a widow, and his siblings. Occupation: Shoemaker’s errand boy. George James’ name is recorded as James Shephard on the census form. Also living there was his brother John Thomas Shephard, age 22, who served in WW1 and sister Gertrude with her son Dennis George. Gertrude was married to William Kettleband, who also served in WW1.

Military History

Private George James Shephard enlisted in Newark he initially served with the service number 60520 in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 30th September 1918 whilst serving with the 13th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment having no known grave his name is commemorated on Panel 77 to 79 & 163A on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
