Family History

Francis Herbert Patrick was born in 1899 at Barnston and was the son of William Edward Patrick a railway labourer and Frances Patrick née Higginson of Laburnham Cottage, Barnston village. His father William Edward Patrick was born in 1859 at Walpole St Andrew , Norfolk and his mother Frances Higginson was born in 1859 at Handsworth, Staffordshire , they were married in 1888 and their marriage was recorded in the Birmingham Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Thomas Higginson b1883 Handsworth, William Edward b1889 Handsworth, Frances b1891 Handsworth, Francis Herbert b1899 Barnston, Rose Ann b1903 Barnston and William b1909 Barnston. In the 1911 census the family are living at Barnston and are shown as William 52 yrs a railway labourer , he is living with his wife Frances 52 yrs and their children, Frances 20 yrs no occupation listed , Francis Herbert 11 yrs a scholar, Rose Ann 8 yrs a scholar and William 2 yrs .

Military History

Private Francis Herbert Patrick attested on 31st March 1915 at Nottingham, he falsely gave his age as 19 yrs and 10 months, his address as Barnstone, Nottinghamshire, he stated he was a bricklayers apprentice and his next of kin was his father William Patrick of the same address. He was given the service number 24926 and posted to the 14th battalion Sherwood Foresters. On the 19th July 1915 he was discharged from the army having made a mis statement as to his age on his enlistment. He again attested on 21st March 1917 giving his age as 17 yrs and 313 days, he was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 9th June 1917 and arrived at the Derby Depot on 12th June 1917. He landed in France on 1st April 1918 and served with the 1/4th battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) he died of wounds , a gun shot wound to his back and chest on 21st April 1918 , he was stil only 18 yrs of age. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery
