William Edwin Owen was born in 1893 in Hucknall and was the son of William a coal miner and Emma Owen, née Varley of 209. Coventry Rd., Bulwell, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1868 at Middleton, Warwickshire his mother Emma Varley was born in Wishaw, Warwickshire, they were married in 1889, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 9 children, the children listed on the 1901/1991 census are : Sarah Jane b1889, Dosthill, Warwickshire, Ada Elizabeth b1891 Hucknalll, William Edwin b1893 Hucknall, Samuel John b1898 Hucknall, Mary E b1897 Hucknall, Beatrice Annie b1901 Hucknall, Florence Gertrude b1904 Hucknall and Edith Gwendoline b1906 Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Jennison Street, Bulwell and are shown as William 43 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Emma 43 yrs and their children , Ada Elizabeth 19 yrs a blouse maker, William Edwin 17 yrs a pony driver (underground), Samuel John 12 yrs Scholar, Beatrice Annie 9 yrs a scholar, Florence Gertrude 7 yrs a scholar and Edith Gwendoline 5 yrs.
Private William Edwin Owen enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed in the Balkans on 1st December 1915. He was killed in action on 7th September 1917 and is buried in Villeret Old Churchyard, Aisne, France grave reference A 11
