Frederick John Marshall was born in 1896 in Upper Broughton and was the son of Samuel a market gardener and Annie Marshall née Kent of 4 Church Lane, Arnold. His father Samuel was born in 1871 at Lowdham and his mother Annie Kent was also born in 1871 in Newark, they were married in 1893 in Nottingham and went on to have 7 children, Fred b1896 Upper Broughton, Henry b1899 Gunthorpe, Alfred b1901 Daybrook, Frank b1903 Arnold, Charles b1905 Arnold, Mabel b1903 Arnold and James b1909 Arnold. In 1911 the family was living on Calverton Road Arnold , the family are living with their grandparents John 61 yrs a dairyman and Mary 61 yrs and are shown as Samuel 40 yrs a market gardener he is living with his wife Annie 40 yrs and their children Fred 14 yrs, Henry 12yrs, Alfred 10 yrs, Frank 8 yrs, Charles 6 yrs, Mabel 3 yrs and James 2 yrs.
Private Frederick John Marshall enlisted at Newark , before the war Fred was a member of the local Territorial Army company of 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters based at the Drill Hall on Arnot Hill Road. At the outbreak of war he was mobilised (service number 2391). He went to France in February 1915 and died in Hospital in Liverpool England from wounds received during the Battle of Loos. His body was returned to his family and he is buried in Arnold Redhill Cemetery Grave Reference: C C 1400
