Arthur was born in 1892 the son of Walter and Hannah Elizabeth Meakin. Walter had been born in 1863 in Nottingham, Hannah Elizabeth in 1872 at Sutton Bonnington. Married around 1891, they had four children, three surviving infancy - Arthur Gordon b.1892 Rawal Pindi, India, Nora Eleanor b.1894 Cliffden Murrel, India and George Charles Stanley b.1908 Nottingham. In 1901, they lived at 41, Old Park Lane, Basford, Nottingham. In 1911, they lived at 14, Cheltenham Street, Old Basford. Walter worked as a wagon builder’s labourer, Arthur Gordon a hosiery trimmer and Nora Eleanor a hosiery mender. Arthur’s effects of £210 12s were left to his father (Probate Nottingham 28/12/1917).
Arthur Gordon Meakin enlisted in Newcastle upon Tyne and is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Grave Reference: IXA C 14
Nottingham Evening Post dated 24th October 1918: “MEAKIN. – In loving memory of Lce.-Cpl. Arthur Gordon Meakin, K.R.R., killed in action October 24th, 1917. 'Tis sweet to know we'll meet again, where partings are no more, and the one I loved so well has only gone before; so long as life and memory last, we will remember thee. A rifleman born, a rifleman he died. – From loving mother, father, brother, and sister.” His father was a former regular soldier, serving with the King's Royal Rifle Corps between 20th October 1885 and 13th June 1902. Spending a number of years in India, he served during the Samana and Hazara campaigns in 1891 and the relief of Chitral in 1895.
