Jonas (Joseph) Willans Horton was born in 1886 in Louth Lincolnshire and was the son of the late John Horton a blacksmith and Sarah Horton, née Cuthbert of 406, Berridge Rd., Hyson Green, Nottingham.His father John was born in 1848 in Lea, Lincolnshire and his mother Sarah Cuthbert was born in 1851 in Louth, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1877 in Louth Lincolnshire and went on to have 5 children, John Henry b1879 Elkington, Lincs, Charles b1880 Lea, Edmund b1882 Louth, George b1884 Louth and Jonas b1886 Louth. His father John died in 1908 in Nottingham he was 59 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 406 Berridge Road, Hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as Sarah 60 yrs a widow, she is living with her sons Edmund 29 yrs a commercial traveller, George 27 yrs a blacksmith and Jonas 25 yrs an army reservist.
Lance Corporal Jonas Willians Horton, [1] enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He landed in France on 21st August 1914, he died as a prisoner of war in German hands on 10th April 1915. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate.[1] Served as Joseph William Horton. 'Jonas' confirmed in 1901 & 1911 Census returns. Given that confirmation of the spelling of his first name in the memorial notice, it seems reasonable to trust the spelling of the second.
His brother Private Charles Horton enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 108th motor transport company of the Army Service Corps .He died in a military hospital in the UK on 15th March 1918 and was buried in the Northern Cemetery, Basford.
