Family History

Joseph Percy Holmes was the son of George [Haywood] Holmes and Harriet Hulme who married at Nottingham in 1895. Their children included: Eunice (b.1896) and Joseph Percy (b.1898). Before they were married Harriet had a child, Emma Elizabeth Hulme (b.1884). The family lived at: 19a Garden Street, Radford [C.1901]; 15 Wyville Street, Radford [C.1911 & CWGC]. George Holmes may have died in Nottingham, aged 46, in 1900. There is no George Holmes listed as the spouse of Harriet Holmes in the 1901 census although she doesn’t specifically state she is a widow at this point.

Military History

Private Joseph Percy Holmes, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he died of wounds on 21st April 1918. He is buried in Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery,West Vlaanderen, Belgium.

In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 21st April 1919 :- “HOLMES. – In loving memory of our dear only son and brother, Drummer Percy Holmes, 15 Wyville-street, died of wounds April 21st, 1918. It is lonely here without you, and said the weary way, our home is not the same to us, since you were called away. – Loving mother, sisters, and little nephew Harry. “HOLMES. – In cherished memory of my dear nephew, Percy Holmes, died of wounds April 21st, 1918. Duty called and he obeyed. – Aunt Lizzie and Albert. “HOLMES. – In loving memory of Pte.
