William was the son of Joseph a farm labourer and Sarah Goodman (née) Spencer of Langar, Barnstone, Nottinghamshire. Joseph and Sarah had 8 children of whom William, Edith, Ellen, Sidney (killed in action 23/3/1918), Joseph and Elizabeth survived infancy. In 1911 the family lived at Langar Barnstone.

Military History

William enlisted at Nottingham on 24th November 1914 and served with the 10th battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was killed on 23rd March 1918 and his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial Peter Gillings
