Fred was born in 1896 in Buwell and was the son of Levi a coal miner and Hannah Brand, née Brown, they lived at 32 Austin Street, Bulwell. His father Levi was born in 1865 in Elsworth, Cambridgeshire and his mother Hannah Brown was born in 1864 in Bulwell, they were married in 1885 in Basford and went on to have a total of 10 children , sadly one died in infancy, their remaining children were all born in Bulwell and were :- Albert Edward b1887, Thomas Harold b1888, Lydia Ann b1890, John Webster b1893, William b1894, Fred b1896, Ivy b1889, Harry b1901 and Arthur b1904. In the 1911 census the family are living at 32 Austin Street, Buwell and are shown as Levi 45 yrs head of the family a coal miner , he is living with his wife Hannah 47 yrs and their children Albert 24 yrs a boot maker and repairer , Thomas Harold 22 yrs a general labourer , Lydia Ann 21 yrs an assistant in the house, John Webster 17 yrs a coal miner, William 16 yrs a grocers assistant. Fred 14 yrs a coal miner, Ivy 11 yrs scholar, Harry 9 yrs scholar and Arthur 6 yrs a scholar.
Gunner Fred Brand, enlisted in Nottingham and served with “D” Battery, 161st Brigade Royal Field Artillery, he was killed in action on 25th March 1918 and is buried in Dochy Farm New British Cemetery.
His brother Thomas Harold Brand also served during the Great War , he enlisted in Nottingham on 28th September 1914, he was 26 yrs and 57 days and with service number 17441 served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was in France with the British Expeditionary Force twice between 14th August 1915 and 25th November 1915, (then served at home) and 19th June 1916 to 27th September 1918. On 27th September 1918 he received a gun shot wound to his left side and face, he was returned to England and discharged from the army on 29th August 1919, his discharged address was 9 Bestwood Terrace, Bulwell. He married his wife Jane Marshall at St Georges Church, Nottingham on 7th August 1911 and went on to have a son Harold born 17th April 1912. He died in Nottingham in 1967 aged 78 yrs.
